How to reduce System Data on Mac safely
Updated 2026-09-26
System Data is a broad macOS category, not one folder you can empty. It can include caches, logs, local snapshots, application support files, developer data, and other items macOS cannot classify. The safe approach is to identify the largest real folders first.
Check the storage breakdown
Open System Settings, choose General, then Storage. Give macOS time to calculate the categories. Treat the System Data number as a clue rather than a cleanup button.
Inspect likely sources
Large application support folders, old installers, device backups, developer caches, and local Time Machine snapshots are common contributors.
- Review ~/Library/Application Support
- Check Downloads for DMG and PKG installers
- Inspect iPhone and iPad backups
- If you develop software, review Xcode and simulator data
Use a visual map before deleting
Volumora scans locally and sizes folders proportionally, making unusually large locations visible. Grant Full Disk Access only when you want protected macOS locations included, then inspect every result before moving anything to Trash.
Frequently asked questions
Can I delete the entire Library folder?
No. Library contains settings and data required by macOS and your apps. Remove only items you understand.
Why does System Data change?
Caches, snapshots, indexes, logs, and temporary files grow and shrink as you use your Mac.
Does Volumora upload this information?
No. File analysis and hashing run locally on your Mac.
