Developer storage guide
Clear Xcode DerivedData and simulator storage
Updated 2026-09-26
Xcode rebuilds many generated files, but developer storage is spread across several locations. Review each category separately so you do not remove an archive, simulator, or package cache you still need.
DerivedData
Xcode stores build products and indexes in ~/Library/Developer/Xcode/DerivedData. Quit active builds, remove obsolete project folders, and let Xcode rebuild them when needed.
Archives and simulators
Use Xcode Organizer to review archives before deletion. Remove unavailable simulator runtimes through Xcode Settings and inspect ~/Library/Developer/CoreSimulator only when you understand the device data.
Find the largest developer folders
Volumora includes a developer cleanup view for DerivedData, archives, simulator data, package caches, and build artifacts. It calculates sizes locally and leaves final selection to you.
Frequently asked questions
Is deleting DerivedData safe?
It is generated data, but deleting it removes indexes and build products, so the next build may take longer.
Will this delete source code?
DerivedData is separate from your project source, but always verify the displayed path before deletion.
Should I delete every simulator?
No. Keep runtimes and devices needed by your active testing matrix.
