How to find large files on Mac
Updated 2026-09-26
A small number of videos, archives, virtual machines, project exports, or forgotten downloads often consume more space than thousands of documents. Start with size, then confirm the file before removing it.
Search by size in Finder
Open Finder, press Command-F, choose File Size as a search condition, and set a useful minimum such as 1 GB. Sort the results by size.
Check folders Finder does not summarize well
Application support folders and deeply nested project directories can be difficult to compare in Finder. A proportional folder map makes the largest branches obvious.
Review before cleanup
Use Quick Look, check the containing folder, and move uncertain items to Trash rather than deleting permanently. Volumora shows the storage map after you activate your license.
Frequently asked questions
What file types are usually largest?
Videos, disk images, archives, virtual machines, backups, and creative project exports are common examples.
Can Volumora search external drives?
Yes. Choose the mounted drive or folder as the scan location.
Does scanning modify files?
No. A scan reads file metadata to calculate sizes and build the map.
