Find duplicate files on Mac without deleting the wrong copy
Updated 2026-09-26
Names are unreliable evidence of duplication. Two files can have different names but identical content, or matching names and completely different contents. Reliable duplicate detection compares size first and then verifies content.
Choose a focused location
Begin with Downloads, Documents, a photo export folder, or an external drive. A focused scan is faster and produces results that are easier to review.
Compare content, not names
Volumora groups same-sized candidates and verifies them with content hashes. Files are not uploaded for comparison.
Keep one intentional copy
Review paths and dates, keep the copy located in the correct project or library, and move only confirmed extras to Trash.
Frequently asked questions
Are similar photos duplicates?
Not necessarily. Exact duplicate detection finds matching file content; visually similar photos require a different review process.
Can files have different names?
Yes. Identical content can be detected even when filenames differ.
Are hashes uploaded?
No. Volumora computes and compares them locally.
